#22 Herons sweep Senior Day matches

GENEVA, N.Y.—The 22nd-ranked William Smith College squash team defeated Dickinson and Mount Holyoke to improve to 9-3 on the season. The Herons defeated the 20th-ranked Red Devils, 6-3, and the Lyons, 7-1, on Senior Day at the Dr. Frank P. Smith '36 Squash Center this afternoon.
 
In the first match of the day, William Smith had 3-0 wins at Nos. 2, 3 and 9. The Herons logged 3-1 victories at No. 5 and No. 6. Playing in the No 2 spot, Marce Marquez Martinez cruised past Lindsay Kuracina, 12-10, 11-8, 11-8. The win was Marquez Martinez's sixth of the season. Lark Ervasti improved to 8-1 on the year with a victory in the No. 3 spot. She defeated Eloise Nimotyn, 11-7, 11-7, 11-6. Maia Dreishpoon bested Katelynn Young, 11-8, 11-9, 11-1. At No. 5, Shante Frank beat Cate Moll, 16-14, 11-7, 9-11, 11-4. Jo Pacheco logged an 11-6, 11-5, 9-11, 11-1 win in the No. 6 spot. Molly Wachter defeated Emerson Rains, 11-2, 10-12, 7-11, 11-6, 13-11, in the closest match of the day. Dickinson logged 3-0 wins to claim two of its points.
 
Against Mount Holyoke, the Herons won all seven of their points 3-0. Ervasti logged her ninth win of the season, besting Giselle Cabrera, 11-3, 11-2, 11-1. Pacheco knocked off Melissa Marquez, 11-5, 11-4, 11-4, in the No. 4 spot. It was Pacheco's team-leading 10th win of the season. Erin Griffis lost a mere three points as she picked up an 11-2, 11-1, 11-0 win at No. 6. Kristen McCormick closed out the match picking up a victory in the No. 8 spot. She beat Dnyaneshwari Haware, 11-5, 11-7, 11-5. It was McCormick's first collegiate victory.
 
Following the match, William Smith honored its two seniors. Wachter and Pacheco were both 2-0 in their Senior Day matches.
 
The Herons will be back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 1, when it welcomes Cornell to the Smith Squash Center.
