Herons aim to repeat at Liberty League Championship

The William Smith College squash team will look to repeat as Liberty League Champion this weekend, Feb. 4-5, when it heads to Poughkeepsie, New York, for the 2022 Liberty League Championship hosted by Vassar College.
 
The Herons will play all three of their matches Saturday at the Vassar College Squash courts. They are scheduled to take the host Brewers at 9 a.m., Bard at 10:30 a.m. and 20th-ranked St. Lawrence at 1:30 p.m.
 
Fans are allowed in Kenyon Hall. Spectators age five or older must be fully vaccinated or have a negative COVID-19 test taken within 24 hours of the event. Fans will be required to provide proof of vaccination or a copy of a negative test to enter the competition venue. Fans who can't make the trip to Poughkeepsie can follow all the action with live scoring on the tournament page.
 
William Smith is 9-3 overall this season and ranked 21st in the nation in the latest College Squash Association team rankings. Jo Pacheco leads the team with 10 wins. She is 10-2, including a 5-1 mark in the No. 7 spot of the lineup. Lark Ervasti, Shante Frank and Molly Wachter all have nine wins. Marce Marquez Martinez is a team-best 5-5 in the No. 1 spot.
 
The Saints enter the weekend with an 8-5 record and are looking to rebound from a 6-3 loss to Bates last Sunday. St. Lawrence defeated William Smith 6-3 back on Nov. 13. Sanna Koivumaki has played every match in the No. 1 spot and is 12-1.
 
The Brewers are ranked 30th in the CSA Team Rankings. Vassar is 6-4 overall this season. The Brewers were swept by William Smith back on Nov. 14. Claire Coss has played a majority of the matches in the No. 1 spot and is 8-2 this year.
 
No. 37 Bard is 0-4 on the year. Pam Jaramillo is the Raptor's No. 1 and has one victory this season.
 
In 2020, William Smith went 3-0 in the conference tournament, claiming their third conference championship. William Smith beat St. Lawrence 6-3 and Vassar 9-0 at the University of Rochester before sweeping Bard 9-0 at the Smith Squash Center.
