Squash teams conclude season at nationals

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—The Hobart and William Smith Colleges squash teams wrapped up the 2021-22 season at the College Squash Association Individual and Doubles Championships.
 
The No. 10 seed, Marce Marquez Martinez, represented the Herons in the singles draw, competing in the Holleran East bracket. In Friday's opening round, she beat the No. 7 seed Mount Holyoke's Mihiliya Kalahe, 12-10, 11-6, 11-2. Later in the afternoon, she was defeated by No. 2 seed, Trinity's Luiz Sarah Lopez Dominguez, 11-6, 11-3, 11-3. Lopez Dominguez went on to win the Holleran East Division.
 
Hussein Labib represented the Statesmen in the singles draw. Labib, the No. 15 seed, took on No. 2 seed, Columbia's James Wyatt. Wyatt swept Labib, 11-9, 11-5, 11-4. In the consolation draw, Labib was defeated by Middlebury's Theodore Best, 11-4, 11-6, 9-11, 11-2.
 
Hobart entered three teams in the doubles draw, William Smith had one and a fifth team was entered in the coed doubles draw. Cameron Temoyan and Giacomo Dalle Molle advanced to the Round of 16 but were edged by Chatham's Mohamed Sadek and Agustin Carranza Pinto, 15-11, 15-13, 15-13. Roberto Vega and Joey Lantos lost their first round match, 15-5, 15-6, 15-13. James Mazzarelli and Sayf Elhawary also competed in the doubles draw. They lost 15-7, 15-5, 15-8 in the first round. Laila Selim and Jada Smith-Padmore dropped a hard fought battle in the first round of the women's doubles draw. They were edged 15-11, 15-10, 7-15, 15-7. In the coed draw, Jo Pacheco and Dalle Molle lost, 15-7, 15-5, 15-9, in the Round of 16. 
 
The Hobart and William Smith Squash teams completed successful seasons. The Statesmen were 11-9 overall and won the Conroy Cup. The Herons were 14-4 overall this season and ended the year with three straight victories, capturing the Walker Cup.
