Sailing opens season with two regattas

The Hobart and William Smith Colleges sailing team opened the 2022 portion of its season with a pair of team race regattas this past weekend, March 5-6. The Colleges finished third at the Georgetown Team Race and fourth at the Navy Team race.
 
In Washington, D.C., HWS posted a 6-6 record as it placed third in a five-team field. Jake Vickers, Chase Carraway, Will Murray, and Eli Gleason served as skippers for the Colleges and Kate Klempen, Sarah Smith, Tory Mileti and Anna McBride competed as crew. The Colleges went 2-2 in each of the three round robins. In the first round, HWS logged wins over Fordham and George Washington. In round 2, the Colleges beat the Rams and Old Dominion. HWS closed out the weekend with wins over the Monarchs and the Colonials. Georgetown won the regatta, posting an 11-1 record on the weekend.
 
In Annapolis, Md, the Colleges posted a 9-11 record, finishing in a tie for third at the Navy Team Race. Fordham was also 9-11 but was awarded the tiebreaker because the Rams won four of the five races between the two teams. Five round robins were completed the regatta. Ella Withington, William Foox, Heather Kerns, Nicholas Sessions, Brook Wood and Blake Stackpoole served as skipper and Ksusha Lowry-Neufield, Tess Weber and Frances Depke competed as crew.
 
HWS was 1-3 in the first round robin, logging a win over SUNY Maritime. The Colleges were 2-2 the second time through the rotation picking up wins over the Privateers and UPenn.  HWS was 3-1 during its third trip through the rotation, beating SUNY Maritime, the Quakers and Navy. After being swept in Round 4, HWS was 3-1 in the final rotation on Sunday. The Colleges beat the Rams, the Privateers and the Midshipmen. Navy won the overall regatta, posting a 16-4 overall record.
 
Hobart will be back in action next weekend, March 12-13, for a pair of regattas. The Colleges return to the District of Columbia for the John Jackson Team Race. HWS will also have a team in Throggs Neck, New York, for the New York Maritime Team Race.
