#13 William Smith cruises past #22 Bates

GENEVA, N.Y.—The 13th-ranked William Smith College Squash team defeated 22nd-ranked Bates College 8-1 at the Smith Squash Courts this afternoon. With the win, the Herons are 6-2 overall while Bates falls to 1-8 overall.
 
KEY STATS:
  • William Smith won four of the matches 3-0. The Herons won two matches 3-1.
  • It was William Smith's first win over Bates in program history.
  • The Herons are now 3-2 against nationally-ranked opponents this season.  
 
MATCH MOMENTS:
  • At the No. 3 spot, Marce Marquez Martinez knocked off Erika Maria Praker-Schmidt, 11-7, 11-8, 11-4. It was Marquez Martinez's sixth win of the season.
  • Lark Ervasti defeated Dainalee Velez, 11-5, 11-6, 11-4, in the No. 6 spot. Ervasti is now 4-3 on the season.
  • Jada Smith-Padmore collected an 11-8, 11-7, 11-4 win at No. 7. She is 6-2 overall on the season, including a 3-0 mark in the No. 7 spot.
  • Jessica Finnerty swept Caroline Taggart, 11-5, 11-3, 11-3, at No. 8. It was Finnerty's second win of the season.  
  • In the No. 2 spot, Laila Selim rallied to win her match against Aasya Patel in four games, 8-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-6.  Selim is now 5-3 on the season.
  • Rafaela Albuja Sanchez and Shante Frank also won 3-1 at No. 1 and 6, respectively. Albuja Sanchez beat Andrea Martagon, 12-10, 11-4, 11-13, 12-10. Frank topped Cordelia Dotson, 11-3, 8-11, 11-1, 11-8.
  • Anna O'Connor notched her team-leading seventh win of the season in the No. 5 spot. She won in five games, 11-4, 11-2, 9-11, 10-12, 11-7. She is 7-1 on the year, including a 2-0 record in the No. 5 spot.
 
UP NEXT:
William Smith will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 14, when it takes on Dickinson in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The match begins a three-match road trip that will see the Herons take on the Red Devils, No. 18 Franklin and Marshall and No. 19 Georgetown.
