Hobart and William Smith Colleges Associate Athletic Trainer Mary Beth Schram was recently named the athletic trainer for the United States hockey teams that will compete in Lake Placid at the 2023 FISU World University Games.

"To have this opportunity to represent Hobart and William Smith Sports Medicine at this level is truly special," Schram said. "I'm honored to be part of the U.S. women's and men's teams. I would like to thank HWS for allowing me to attend the World University Games while continuing to care for our student-athletes here on campus. I'm excited to share this experience with Coach Taylor, Luke and Cooper."

Schram joins Hobart Hockey Head Coach Mark Taylor, sophomore forward Luke Aquaro and sophomore defenseman Cooper Swift who will also represent the Colleges.

Schram joined the HWS sports medicine team in 2018 and was promoted to associate athletic trainer in 2021. She has assisted with athletic training needs for all Herons and Statesmen, providing steadfast care to student-athletes. Schram worked directly with the Hobart hockey team last year. The Statesmen were 20-6-2 overall and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament. Schram has also worked closely with the William Smith hockey program for the past four years.

"This is an incredible opportunity, experience and recognition for Mary Beth, our Sports Performance Department and our school," Associate Athletic Director for Sports Performance and Strategic Initiatives Chris Gray said. "Mary Beth is an outstanding athletic trainer and an even better human being. She has worked so hard for this opportunity and I know she will represent herself, our department and our school in a first class manner."

Schram has also worked with Hobart football, Hobart soccer and the Colleges' sailing team. She also will work with the baseball team in the spring semester. Schram's athletic training experience also includes providing medical coverage for sports camps at Syracuse University and her work as a student athletic trainer at SUNY Cortland.

"Mary Beth has been an integral member of our staff for several years now," Coordinator of Sports Medicine/Athletics Healthcare Administrator Stephanie Habecker said. "She has spent quite a bit of time at The Cooler with both our men's and women's ice hockey programs and we are ecstatic about this great opportunity. Mary Beth is an excellent athletic trainer and USA Hockey is lucky to have her for the World University Games. We wish her and Team USA the best of luck during the games and look forward to seeing our Hobart Hockey athletes compete at this level."
