GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart and William Smith Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine Stephanie Habecker announced the appointment of two assistant athletic trainers for the 2026-27 academic year today. Caleb Besaw and Abigail Sarmiento will bring their expertise and skills to the HWS Sports Medicine Team.
 
A native of North Adams, Massachusetts, Besaw holds a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in athletic training from Vermont State Castleton. Over the past two years as a graduate student, he gained practical experience as an athletic training student for the Spartans, at Middlebury College and at Burr and Burton Academy. Besaw worked with student-athletes from a wide range of sports including baseball, basketball, football, soccer and swimming and diving.
 
Originally from Rochester, New York, Sarmiento earned a bachelor's degree in exercise science from Lincoln Memorial in 2024 and a master's degree in athletic training from Central Florida in 2026. As a graduate student, she developed her skills and knowledge through experiences from scholastic to collegiate to professional sports and with the general public in a physical therapy clinic. Sarmiento spent her first semester working with the teams at Lake Buena Vista High School and worked with the Orlando Solar Bears of the East Coast Hockey League the following semester. Last year, she worked with the football, women's lacrosse and beach volleyball teams at Stetson.
 
Besaw and Sarmiento are certified and licensed athletic trainers and members of the National Athletic Trainers Association.
 
"Caleb and Abigail bring complementary backgrounds and a shared commitment to athlete-centered care," Habecker said. "Caleb's diverse experience across multiple sports will deepen our coverage, while Abigail's work at the professional level brings valuable perspective to our program. We're excited to have them join the Sports Performance Team."
