Hobart heads to Union for Liberty League showdown

The Hobart College football team will return to Liberty League play when the Statesmen visit Schenectady, New York, to take on Union College Saturday, Oct. 21. Kickoff at Frank Bailey Field is scheduled for noon.

FOR THE RECORD
  • Hobart is 5-1 overall, 1-1 in the Liberty League.
  • Union is 6-1, 2-1 in league play.
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
  • Union leads the all-time series 53-50-2.
  • The home team has won each of the past six showdowns between the Statesmen and Garnet Chargers. Hobart was the last visiting team to prevail in the series when it captured a 52-14 win over Union in Schenectady in 2015.
  • In fact, of the past six Hobart-Union games, five have been decided by 7 points or less. Since 2016, the average margin of victory is just 5.8 points.
  • Hobart has won nine of the past 12 games in the series.

  • Saturday's game features the top two teams in the Liberty League in scoring defense and total defense.

STATESMEN TO WATCH
  • Hobart leads the Liberty League with 12 sacks. The Statesmen defense features four players in the top five in sacks per game. Sophomore linebacker Mike McGhee is tied for third with 2.5 sacks, while senior linebacker Anthony Romano, junior linebacker Peterson Monexant and first-year defensive end DonJuan McGee are tied for fifth with two each.
 
ABOUT LAST YEAR
  • On Oct. 29, 2022, Hobart defended Boswell Field, using a late touchdown to secure a 23-21 win over Union.
  • The Garnet Chargers carried a 21-17 lead into halftime and maintained that advantage after a scoreless third quarter.
  • With less than three minutes remaining in the game, Hobart put together the only scoring drive of the second half. Starting from their own 31, the Statesmen completed an 11-yard pass on the first play and then reclaimed the lead on a 58-yard touchdown pass from quarterback David Krewson to wide receiver Rane Daramola.
  • Hobart missed the extra point, leaving the door open for a game-winning field goal, but the Statesmen defense slammed the door shut, stopping the Garnet Chargers twice in the final two minutes.
