4/10/2023 5:30:00 PM

It was recently announced that senior Ian Albreski of the Hobart College cross country team is the recipient of a 2023 U.S. Student Fulbright Award to Germany where he will serve as an English teaching assistant beginning in September.

The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government's flagship international exchange program, providing full research grants and English teaching assistantships awarded for graduate study, research, or teaching opportunities in more than 140 countries. Albreski was also offered a place with the Fulbright Austria Foreign Language Teaching Assistantship Program.

Albreski says he applied to the program because of his love for German language and culture. He studied abroad at the University of Tubigen last spring and has since served as a DAAD Young Ambassador for the German Academic Exchange Service.

The Avon, Connecticut native has twice been awarded the Julius C. Blocker German Area Studies Fellowship in support of his research and scholarship on German culture. He is also the recipient of the Newman Civic Fellowship for his work on behalf of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives on campus; the Dr. Arnold N. Cohen '71, P'05 Phi Beta Kappa Book Prize and the Charles H. Hurd Prize in English and Comparative Literature.

On campus, Albreski serves as co-president of Thel, the student literary magazine, an archival assistant in the Warren Hunting Smith Library and the captain of the Hobart cross country team. He led the Statesmen in his senior campaign posting his best finish at the Cross Country Only Championships on Oct. 15, posting a time of 29:16.1 in the 8k event. This time landed him in eighth place out of 72 runners.

Albreski ran in seven races this season and posted his fastest 8k at the Liberty League Championships on Oct. 29. He stopped the clock at 29:02.1, which put him 78th out of 109 runners.

In three years on the Statesmen cross country team, Albreski has run in 25 events and posted four top-15 finishes. He has been named a Liberty League All-Academic selection three times and won multiple awards, including the Coach Ron Fleury Cross Country Award, the Arnold Memorial Scholar Athlete Award, and the Dr. Augustus H. "Gus" Hillman '26 Award.

Following his Fulbright experience, Albreski plans to pursue a graduate degree in comparative literature.
