Hobart Volleyball hosts 1st home match Friday vs Penn St. Behrend

The Hobart College volleyball team will play its first home match in program history at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, when the Statesmen take on Penn St. Behrend in Bristol Gymnasium. The match will kick off the five-team two-day Hobart Volleyball Tournament.

  • Kean vs. Penn St. Behrend- noon
  • Kean vs. St. Norbert- 2 p.m.
  • Hobart vs Carlow- 4 p.m.

ABOUT THE STATESMEN
  • Hobart enters the weekend with a 2-1 record after defeating SUNY Potsdam and Wells College in the season-opening weekend. The Statesmen's lone loss came to Nichols College.  
  • Graduate student Andrew Kim and first-year Zack Farren were recognized by the UVC as the conference's Co-Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
  • Kim paces Hobart, averaging a league-leading 6.43 kills per set. First-year Daniel Sappia follows with 4.40 kills per set.
  • Farren ranks third in the nation and first in the conference in assists per set, averaging 10.50. Classmate Noah DeLong also saw action in the setting position, averaging 3.33 assists per set.
  • First-year libero Gavin Meador leads the Statesmen defensively and is third in the conference with 2.55 digs per set. Farren has chipped in 2.13 digs per set through eight sets.
  • Hobart has proven to be a strong team from the service line, serving up 21 aces compared to its opponents' 11. Kim and first-year Grayson Getz lead the team with five each while DeLong and senior Dima Piskun have added three each.
ABOUT THE LIONS
  • Friday's matchup with the Statesmen will be the season opener for Penn St. Behrend.
  • The Lions are coming off a 22-8 season in 2023 that saw them win the AMCC Championship after defeating Geneva College 3-1 in the championship match.
  • Penn St. Behrend returns senior middle blocker Owen Wienczkowski, who led the team with 2.26 kills per set last season.
  • The Lions also return starting setter Alex Jackson, who led the Lions with 8.54 assists per set in 2023.
ABOUT THE GREEN KNIGHTS
  • St. Norbert comes to Geneva with a 1-0 record and is coming off a 3-0 win over Thiel College on Wednesday.
  • Senior Jackson Corcoran leads the Green Knights, averaging 3.33 kills per set. Junior Owen Knezevich follows with 2.67 kills per set.
  • Sophomore setter Michael Whitney recorded 33 assists in the sweep of the Bobcats. He averages a team-leading 11.0 assists per set.
  • St. Norbert had three players record double digit digs in its season opener. Ryan Conway, Kaden Kornaus and Knezevich combined for 30 digs in the win.
ABOUT THE CELTICS
  • Carlow enters the weekend with a 0-1 record after falling to Geneva College 3-0 in its season-opener.
  • Senior Russ Cyprowski leads the Celtics, averaging 4.33 kills per set. He is followed by junior Will Piccolino with 2.67 kills per set.
  • Sophomore setter James Stone averages a team-leading 6.67 assists per set.
  • Carlow had three players in double digit digs against the Golden Tornados. Piccolino, Logan Alexander, and Ryan Callahan combined for 33 digs in the loss.
ABOUT THE COUGARS
  • Kean brings an 0-2 overall record to Geneva after falling to St. Joseph's (LI) and reigning national champion and top-ranked Stevens Institute, 3-0.
  • Sophomore Chris Mitchell leads the Cougars, averaging 4.17 kills per set and is followed by classmate Danny Pugliano with 1.33.
  • Sophomore setter David Flores averages a team-leading 4.67 assists per set. Brandon Millias and Luke Frankenfield follow, averaging 3.00 and 2.83, respectively.
  • First-year libero Tyler Quinn leads the Cougars with 19 digs, averaging 3.17 digs per set.
