Hobart hosts 3 nationally-ranked opponents this weekend

The Hobart volleyball team welcomes three nationally-ranked opponents to Bristol Gymnasium for the first ever Statesmen Volleyball Classic. The Statesmen are set kickoff the four-team two-day tournament against No. 16 Misericordia on Friday, at 3 p.m.

Friday, Feb. 9 
  • Hobart vs. #16 Misericordia, 3 p.m. 
  • #16 Misericordia vs. #1 Wentworth, 5 p.m. 
  • Hobart vs. #18 Baldwin Wallace, 7 p.m. 
Saturday, Feb. 10 
  • #18 Baldwin Wallace vs. #16 Misericordia, 11 a.m. 
  • #1 Wentworth vs. #18 Baldwin Wallace, 1 p.m. 
  • Hobart vs. #1 Wentworth, 3 p.m.

ABOUT THE STATESMEN
  • Hobart enters the weekend with an 8-3 record in its first varsity season.
  • Hobart's attack has been putting pressure on opponents all season, as the offense posts 12.77 kills per set, fifth in the nation. 
  • Spearheading the high-powered attack has been graduate student Andrew Kim.The outside hitter leads the nation in kills per set (5.76) and points per set (6.62) and ranks third in attacks per set (10.79).  
  • First-years Daniel Sappia (3.68), Anthony Zontini (2.33) and Aiden Kemora (2.00) have all played significant roles in Hobart's attack and have the Statesmen ranked second in the conference in kills. 
  • First-year setter Zack Farren has been the primary facilitator of the dynamic attack. Farren leads Hobart with 10.27 assists per set, sixth highest in the nation.
  • First-year libero Gavin Meador leads the defense, averaging 2.41 digs per set.
ABOUT THE COUGARS
  • Misericordia brings an 8-2 record to Geneva.
  • Junior Jared Piontkowski leads the Cougars, boasting team highs in total points (161), kills (139), and aces (13). His 4.21 kills per set is 11th best in the nation. 
  • Junior setter Gannon DeFrain is 10th in the nation averaging 9.62 assists per set.  
  • The Cougar defense has been a group effort, but senior Anthony DePalma has led the team in digs per set (1.55) 
ABOUT THE YELLOW JACKETS
  • Baldwin Wallace sports a 5-1 record heading into the weekend.
  • The Yellow Jackets are among the national leaders in kills (12.78), team attacks (32.26), and assists (11.87) per set.  
  • Senior outside hitter Michael Beard leads the Yellow Jackets in kills per set (3.41) and total points (66). 
  • Sophomore Aiden Kim leads the defense with 3.33 digs per set. 
ABOUT THE LEOPARDS
  • Undefeated Wentworth is 7-0 and has only dropped three sets all season.
  • The Leopards are third in the nation in kills per set (12.79) and fifth in assists per set (11.71).
  • Wentworth's 12.79 kills per set ranks third in the nation and their 11.71 assists per set ranks fifth.  
  • Wentworth is seventh in the nation in blocks per set (2.33). Graduate student Brandon Dunz leads the team with 20 blocks.
