5 Statesmen earn All-USCHO recognition

3/27/2024 3:43:00 PM

Five members of the national champion Hobart Hockey team were named to the All-USCHO teams yesterday. The Statesmen's five selections were the most by one team.

Sophomore forward Tanner Hartman highlighted the five selections, earning first team recognition. He is the second straight Statesman to be named to the All-USCHO first team. Sophomore goalie Damon Beaver was placed on the second team after earning first team recognition as a first-year. Senior forward Artem Buzoverya picked up third team recognition while sophomore forward Ignat Belov and junior forward Cooper Swift collected honorable mention.

Hartman played in all 31 games this season. The first team CCM/AHCA All-American led Hobart with 20 goals, 25 assists and 45 points. All three totals rank in the top 10 in Hobart's single-season record books. Hartman scored six game-winning goals this season, second on the Statesmen's single-season list. He kickstarted his season when he recorded a combined 14 points (5g, 9a) in wins over Brockport, UMass Boston and Johnson & Wales. Against the Eagles, he recorded three assists. A week later in the game against the Beacons, Hartman set a Hobart single-game record with five assists and six points. The next day against the Wildcats, he had a Statesman record four goals. In total, Hartman had 14 multi-point games. He is credited with the game-winning goals in the NEHC Championship game against Skidmore and the national semifinals against Utica.  Hartman, who was named the Elite 90 Award recipient as the player with the highest GPA at the site of the final, finished the year seventh in the nation in points per game (1.45), 13th in goals per game (0.55) and 15th in assists per game (0.81).

Hartman has played in 60 career games, recording 27 goals and 37 assists for 64 points.

Beaver, who was named the USCHO Rookie of the Year last year, was 18-1-1 in goal this season, posting a 0.94 GAA, a .962 save percentage and seven shutouts. He lowered his program record for save percentage and matched his records for wins and shutouts. Beaver's GAA was better than his record from last season, but fellow sophomore Mavrick Goyer finished the year with a 0.91 GAA. Among goalies that qualified, Beaver was first in the nation in GAA, winning percentage, save percentage and tied for first in shutouts. Goyer played just under 33 percent of the games so his statistics did not appear in the NCAA rankings.

Beaver made a season-high 44 saves in Hobart's thrilling four-overtime victory over Curry in the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament. He made 37 saves in a 1-1 tie with Norwich and stopped 35 shots against Oswego in the season opener. Against Trinity in the national championship game, Beaver outdueled the Sid Watson Award Winner (the national player of the year), stopping all 24 shots he faced. He did not allow a goal in November, becoming the first goalie in program history to record four consecutive shutouts with wins over Norwich, Southern Maine, Buffalo State and Brockport. He had an assist in the NEHC semifinals against Southern Maine.

Beaver has played in 40 career games, posting a 36-3-1 overall record with a 0.98 GAA, a .927 save percentage and 14 shutouts. He holds the Hobart career record for shutouts, GAA, and save percentage. He is fourth with 36 wins.

A captain, Buzoverya played all 31 games for Hobart. He had 31 points on eight goals and 23 assists. A second team CCM/AHCA All-American, he was second on the team with 23 assists and third with 31 points. Buzoverya recorded four points on two goals and two assists during the NEHC tournament, including a goal and an assist against Skidmore in the conference title game. He was named the tournament's most outstanding player. It was one of 11 multi-point games for Buzoverya. The 2023-24 NEHC Player of the Year was the runner-up for the Sid Watson Award.

Swift also played a key role in Hobart's penalty-killing unit that finished the year first in the nation (.968). The Statesmen allowed only three power-play goals on their opponent's 95 attempts this season, breaking an NCAA Division III mark held by Wisconsin-River Falls.
