#36 Hobart earns bye in Liberty League Championship

The 36th-ranked Hobart tennis team will travel to Ithaca, New York, this weekend to compete in the 2024 Liberty League Men's Tennis Championship. The Statesmen earned a first-round bye after clinching the No. 2 seed in the regular season and will take on the winner of third-seeded Vassar and sixth-seeded Ithaca on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The tournament will be hosted at the Reis Tennis Center on the campus of Cornell University.

Hobart finished the regular season with a 14-5 overall record with a 7-1 mark in league play and is ranked No. 10 in the ITA's Northeast Region and No. 3 in the NCAA Region II rankings.

The Statesmen are coming off a 9-0 sweep of fourth-seeded St. Lawrence last weekend. Senior Sean Pesin and sophomore Nick Fischer were named the Liberty League Doubles Team of the Week, while first-year Achilleas Kousaridis was named the conference's rookie of the week for their performances against the Saints.
 
The Brewers (12-5, 6-2) are set to take on the Bombers (7-11, 3-5) in the first round on Friday at 11:30 a.m. Last time the Statesmen saw its potential opponents, Hobart defeated Vassar 5-4 and swept Ithaca.

Top-seeded RPI (15-1, 7-0) will take on the winner of fourth-seeded St. Lawrence (8-10, 4-4) and fifth-seeded Skidmore (5-11, 4-4). The Saints will take on the Thoroughbreds on Friday at 8:30 a.m. for a spot in the semis.
 
ABOUT THE STATESMEN

  • Pesin leads the Statesmen in the No. 1 singles spot with a 9-7 record in dual matches. He is the No. 4 ranked singles player in the NCAA Region II rankings.
  • Kousaridis is riding a six-match win streak and has a team-leading 14-2 record in dual matches. He was named the Liberty League Rookie of the Week for the seventh time this season.
  • Junior Hyat Oyer went undefeated in conference play, posting a 7-0 record against conference opponents. He is 8-1 in the No. 4 spot and 16-6 overall this season.
  • Junior Nick Grosso is 13-5 in dual matches this season and is 10-4 in the No. 6 spot.
  • Pesin and Fischer are 13-5 in dual matches this season in the No. 1 spot. The duo is ranked No. 5 in the ITA Northeast Region rankings and No. 2 in the NCAA Region II rankings and just earned their fourth doubles team of the week recognition this season.
  • Oyer and junior Troy Steiner are 10-7 in dual matches this season primarily in the No. 2 spot, while senior Winter Fagerberg and junior Rahul Vallabhajosula are 10-3 in doubles play, primarily in the No. 3 spot. Both duos were 4-2 in conference play this season.

  • Vassar ranks No. 47 in the ITA national rankings and No. 6 in the NCAA Region II rankings.
  • Jay Wong is 10-7 in dual matches this season and 8-7 in the No. 1 spot. He is ranked No. 5 in the NCAA Region II singles rankings.
  • Eugene Lee leads the Brewers in singles play with an 11-4 record in dual matches. He is 7-1 in the No. 3 spot for Vassar.
  • Lee and Pedro Cattaruzzi are 8-4 in dual match doubles play this season in the No. 3 spot.
  • The Brewers have had a lot of movement in the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles spots this season. Henry Zhang and Fernando Bauermeister lead the way with a 6-4 record in the No. 2 spot.

ABOUT THE BOMBERS

  • Nicolas Luis is 9-7 in dual matches in the No. 1 spot for Ithaca. He ranks No. 7 in the NCAA Region II singles rankings.
  • Gijs Fidler is 10-6 in dual matches this season and is 10-5 in the No. 2 spot.
  • Fidler and Emiliano Pedrero are 8-8 in doubles play this season in the No. 1 spot.
  • Siddharth Vaada and Eric Dubilirer are 6-0 in doubles play this season but did not see action in conference play.
