This summer, Fiona Gallagher '26, a blueliner on the William Smith hockey team, is interning for Congressman Mike Quigley (D-Ill.) at his U.S. House of Representatives constituent office in Chicago.

Gallagher is working in the office as first line support to constituents within the congressional district, assisting with community outreach and drafting letters and memos.

A double major in writing and rhetoric and history, and a double minor in American studies and gender, sexuality and intersectional justice, Gallagher intends to pursue a career in law. She says many of the classes and programs she has taken are assisting her this summer.

"My work with the Writing Colleagues Program on campus, for example, has given me the necessary tools to succeed in my internship. I have learned how to effectively communicate with peers and worked to grow my abilities as a writer," Gallagher says.

Gallagher landed the position in Quigley's office after two rounds of interviews, which she said she felt prepared for thanks to prep with the Salisbury Center for Career, Professional and Experiential Education. "I was very nervous throughout both rounds of interviews but through practice, I was able to work through my answers and calm my nerves."

On the ice, Gallagher has appeared in 49 games during her first two season, producing seven assists. She was a member of the 2023-24 NEHC All-Academic Team and was a 2022-23 AHCA All-American Scholar. Gallagher was inducted to the Laurel Society this spring. Before her internship, she joined a 3-week study abroad program to Dubrovnik, Croatia. During the academic year, Gallagher works as a writer in the HWS Office of Marketing and Communications.
