Fischer leads Hobart at ITA Northeast Regional Championships

MADISON, N.J.— Six members of the Hobart College tennis team competed at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Men's Northeast Regional Championships this weekend on the campus of Drew University.

Hobart was highlighted by junior Nick Fischer advancing to the round of 16 in singles play, before joining senior Nick Grosso in doubles play and advancing to the quarterfinals. Senior's Hyat Oyer and Rahul Vallabhajosula also advanced to the quarterfinals in doubles play.

SINGLES ACTION: 

  • Fischer opened strong and advanced to the second round after defeating Jose Antonio Chavez from Hamilton college in a tiebreaker, 6-0, 4-6 (10-4). Fischer then beat Vassar's Fernando Bauermeister, 6-4, 7-5, before falling to eventual finalist and No. 1 seed Aiden Drover-Mattinen from RPI, 6-1, 6-0, in the round of 16. 
  • Oyer defeated Tuna Nergizoglu from Baruch College, 6-1, 6-4, before falling to Kavin Shukla from the University of Rochester, 6-3, 6-1, in the round of 32.  
  • Grosso put up a good fight in the first round against Hamilton's Villem Aadamsoo, but lost in a tiebreaker, 6-3, 0-6 (10-6).

DOUBLES ACTION:

  • The pairing of Fischer and Grosso defeated Alex Lee and Bryan Hui from NYU, 8-6, followed by another win over Broderick Pinto and Jake David from St. Lawrence University in the round of 16, 8-2. Fischer and Grosso then fell in the quarter finals to TCNJ's Brett Schuster and Alberto Thomas, 8-3. 
  • The Statesmen pair of Oyer and Vallabhajosula advanced to the second round after defeating Baruch's Juan Paredes and Juan Medoza, 8-3. Oyer and Vallabhajosula then beat No. 2 seed Griffin Biernat and Yuval Goodman from Skidmore, before falling in the quarterfinals to eventual finalists Connor Griff and Chavez, 8-4. 
  • Senior's Troy Steiner and Jacob Linares defeated Union's Ben Jacobs and Jesus Sosa 8-6 in the round of 32 before falling to Skidmore's Nika Mori and Fletcher King 8-6 in the second round.

NEXT UP:  

Hobart will be back in action on Saturday, March 8, when it opens its spring schedule away against TCNJ.
