#9 Statesmen set for Fenway Classic this weekend

The ninth-ranked Hobart volleyball team will be back in action this weekend, January 25-26, when it heads to Boston, Massachusetts, to compete in the 2025 Fenway Classic. The Statesmen will play four matches, highlighted by a matchup with No. 10 Wentworth.

ABOUT THE STATESMEN

  • Hobart jumped one spot in the AVCA national poll and is ranked No. 9, marking the highest ranking in program history. The Statesmen also landed at No. 9 in this week's FrogJump Volleyball weekly rankings.
  • Hobart enters the weekend with a program-best 7-0 record to open the season after defeating Bard and Eastern Mennonite twice last week.
  • Graduate student Andrew Kim was named the AVCA National Player of the Week after two dominating performances against the Royals. Kim averaged 5.57 kills per set, 1.43 service aces per set, 3.29 digs per set and 7.36 points per set through seven sets.
  • Kim is averaging a nation's-best 6.76 points per set and second-best 5.43 kills per set and 1.05 service aces per set. Sophomore Noah DeLong follows with 1.82 kills per set, while classmate Daniel Sappia chips in 1.43 kills per set.
  • Sophomore Zack Farren and graduate student Benjamin Lincoln lead Hobart from the setter position and average 5.29 and 3.96 assists per set, respectively. Farren ranks sixth in the conference in that category.
  • Defensively, sophomore libero Gavin Meador leads the Liberty League with 2.67 digs per set. Kim chips in 2.00 digs per set which ranks seventh in the UVC.
  • First-year Alain Malcolm leads the Statesmen at the net and ranks third in the conference with 1.17 blocks per set. Classmate Josh Reilly follows close behind with 0.76 blocks per set, which ranks seventh in the league.
  • Hobart has impressed from the service line this season and has tallied 48 aces as a team. Kim leads the way with 22, while Sappia has chipped in five. Sophomore Grayson Getz and first-year Lawson Drabik have added four aces each this season.

ABOUT THE BEARCATS

  • Saturday's matchup with Hobart will be the season opener for Baruch.
  • The Bearcats are coming off a 19-7 season in 2024 that saw them defeat Hunter in the CUNYAC championship match and reach the first round of the NCAA tournament where they fell to No. 9 NYU in straight sets.
  • Baruch returns two of its three top producers from last season. Peter Gavroff and Juancarlos Henriquez averaged 2.79 and 2.06 kills per set, respectively. The duo combined for 56 blocks and 53 service aces last season.
  • The Bearcats also return their starting setter, Ryan Oommen who averaged 8.70 assists per set a year ago.

ABOUT THE LEOPARDS

  • Wentworth dropped one spot in this week's AVCA national poll to No. 10 after going 2-1 in its season-opening weekend. The Leopards are coming off a 3-1 loss to No. 6 Vassar.
  • Andrew Ahn paces Wentworth offensively, averaging 2.64 kills per set. He is followed by Alem Dubcak with 2.63 kills per set.
  • Josh Milke and Brayden Green lead the Leopards from the setter position and average 8.83 and 8.38 assist per set, respectively.
  • Green averages a team-leading 2.63 digs per set, while Matthew Zegowitz averages a team-leading 1.40 blocks per set.
  • Last time they met, Wentworth defeated Hobart 3-0 in Bristol Gym on Feb. 10, 2024. Kim led the Statesmen with 16 kills (.263), six digs and two blocks. Farren tallied 21 assists.

ABOUT THE SAINTS

  • Emmanuel enters the weekend with a 2-1 record and is coming off a 3-1 loss to No. 20 MIT Saturday.
  • Michael Shelley leads the Saints with 4.00 kills per set and is followed by Trey Guest with 2.78 kills per set.
  • Jehuda Tawalujan averages a team-leading 7.43 assists per set. Quincy Moore chips in 5.50 assists per set for the Saints.
  • Shelley also leads Emmanuel defensively and averages 1.43 digs per set. Nick Sciabica follows with 1.43 digs per set while Louis Da Silva chips in a team-leading 1.30 blocks per set.

ABOUT THE GULLS

  • Endicott is 1-1 on the season and is coming off a 3-2 win over Rivier on Wednesday.
  • Jake Laborde leads the Gulls offensively, averaging 3.75 kills per set and is followed by Aidan Iacovelli with 3.29 kills per set.
  • Matty Tiernan runs Endicott's offense from the setter position and averages 8.88 assists per set.
  • Tiernan also leads the Gulls defensively, averaging a team-leading 1.88 digs per set. Adin Jepsky chips in 1.75 digs per set.
  • Thomas Matchett averages a team-leading 1.25 blocks per set while Corey Klass Jr. adds 1.00 per set.
