Three members of the William Smith soccer team were recognized by the Liberty League for their efforts in a pair of victories last week. Sophomore defender Nell Dwyer was named the Defensive Performer of the Week. Fellow sophomore Grace Metzler and first-year Sofia Carney earned a spot on the weekly honor roll.

The trio helped guide William Smith to a 2-0-0 week in Liberty League play last week. On Wednesday, the Herons defeated St. Lawrence 4-0. They followed that up with a 2-1 victory over Union on Saturday. William Smith, which is ranked 22nd in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, improved to 11-2-2 overall with a 7-1-0 mark in conference play.

Dwyer played a key role on both ends of the field in the win over the Saints. She was credited with the game-winning goal, scoring her first goal of the season from distance. On the defensive end of the field, Dwyer also helped the Herons pitch their league-leading ninth shutout of the season. Dwyer has scored four goals during her career, all four have been game-winning tallies.

Metzler led William Smith with three points on the week. Against St. Lawrence, she scored her second goal of the season. On Saturday against the Garnet Chargers, Metzler set up Miranda DeMura's first collegiate goal. Metzler has played in all 15 games this season. She has nine points on two goals and five assists.

Like Dwyer, Carney also played an important role on both ends of the field against the Saints. She scored her first collegiate goal and helped the Herons' defense pitch a shutout. Carney has played in all 15 games this season, starting the last four. She has five points on a goal and three assists.

Entering the final week of the regular season, the Herons are tied atop the Liberty League standings with Vassar. William Smith can clinch at least a share of the regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the conference tourney with a win at Rensselaer on Saturday.
