ROCHESTER, N.Y.—The Hobart rowing team opened their 2026-27 season at Head of the Genesee Regatta on Saturday against a field of seven teams. The Statesmen entered four events and won gold in all four.
With small boats, fours, and eights racing along the Genesee River, the rowers experienced a headwind that increased throughout the day, intensifying in the afternoon to six to seven miles per hour.
COLLEGIATE 4+
- Hobart entered two fours in the first event of the day. The Statesmen competed with boats from Ithaca, RIT, Rochester, and West Side Rowing Club. The Statesmen secured a one-two finish with Hobart's A boat obtaining gold and the B boat bringing home silver.
- The Statesmen's top boat was manned by Sam Hyman, James Faulkner, LJ Justus, Buckley Newbold, and Fletcher Grantham.
- Hobart built up to speed and kicked off the first race of the day effectively in Bow number 1. Throughout the race, the men were able to lift the pace, allowing the boat to run. Facing a little bit of headwind, the Statesmen executed tight turns, not adding any extra distance to their course. They crossed the finish with a time of 17.22.661.
- Hobart's B boat was composed of Duncan Wolski, Kiré Richardson, William Walker, Henry McComb, and Elliot Morris.
- They surged off the line quickly and built to a high rate, allowing them to establish an aggressive pace early in the race. As the Statesmen approached the 3,000-meter mark, the crew was able to settle into a steady rhythm, letting them continue their momentum to the finish. The Statesmen finished with a time of 18:09.106.
NOVICE 4+
- Hobart also entered two boats into the novice four race.
- The Statesmen's A boat was powered by Wolski, Stefan Markovic, Dylan Faulk, Nathan Berneir, and Nolan Adams.
- The men came through the start line with purpose, building their rate swiftly and smoothly without sacrificing their rhythm. Battling a developing headwind in the early afternoon, they rowed with better balance by rowing with higher hands. They finished with a time of 18:17.578, bringing home gold.
- Hobart's B boat included Colin MacLean, Jack Rudolph, Jude Maguire-Mueller, Matthew Eggert, and Dawson Greene.
- The men's second Novice 4 faced a tougher piece as developing wind made it difficult to find a clean catch and build a rate early in the race. Despite this, the crew continued to work through the conditions and saved a successful sprint in the last 750 meters, which gave the Statesmen a burst of speed needed to finish the piece with increased momentum. The boat crossed the finish line with a time of 19:00.573, claiming a silver medal.
OPEN PAIRS
- Hobart had three of the four pairs in the Open Pair event, competing against West Side Rowing Club. The Statesmen swept the podium.
- Hobart's pairs were comprised of Cameron Nixon and Liam O'Connor in the A boat, Joey Burvis and Liam Yokanovich in the B boat, and Eli Ager and Andrew Senorski in the C boat.
- Gold was claimed by Nixon and O'Connor with a time of 21:10.745.
- Silver was obtained by Burvis and Yokanovich with a time of 21:46.198.
- Yokanovich recollected his pair race with Burvis, stating, "I'd say it was an overall good race. Throughout it, Joey and I's pressure matched up better than it has been at practice before, and I was able to steer pretty well."
- Bronze was won by Ager and Senorski with a time of 22:36.199.
COLLEGIATE 8 +
- Hobart entered two boats into the Men's Collegiate Eight alongside Ithaca College, RIT, and the University of Rochester. The Statesmen won gold and bronze to round out the day.
- The Statesmen A was powered by Hyman, Faulkner, Justus, Newbold, Richardson, Walker, Grantham, O'Connor and McComb.
- The men leapt off the start aggressively, finding a good rhythm until around the 1,000-meter mark, where the Statesmen came around the first large turn and battled an increasing afternoon headwind. The men persevered, not losing too much of their boat speed, and built a higher rate in the last 500 meters and rowed over the finish with a newfound rhythm.
- After the afternoon race, Hyman reflected, "We're continuing to perfect our stroke and building our fitness, which will really pay off in late October and early November when the Princeton Chase comes around. I'm really looking forward to that race."
- Hobart's B boat was driven by Duncan Wolski, Joey Burvis, Stefan Markovic, Elliot Morris, Cameron Nixon, Dylan Faulk, Liam Yokanovich, Nolan Adams and Jude Maguire-Mueller.
- The Statesmen's second boat race went equally energetic through the start, building instantaneously to a rate of thirty-four which held throughout the event. They crossed the finish with a time of 17:04.983.
- Freshman Jude Maguire-Mueller spoke to their success, stating, "Stroke seat Joey Burvis gave a lot of great pointers about keeping rhythm long, which allowed us to do well in the start and gave us fuel through the middle and end."
