GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart rowing team was back in action on its home waters this afternoon, competing in the annual Challenge on the Canal. The Statesmen won gold medals in two events, the Varsity Eight and FY/Novice Eight.
Competing against Rochester Institute of Technology, Mercyhurst, and Hamilton, the Statesmen experienced clear skies with a very mild headwind that diminished throughout the morning.
FIRST-YEAR/NOVICE EIGHT
- The FY/Novice 8+ was composed of Colin MacLean, Jack Rudolph, Dylan Faulk, Jude Maguire-Mueller, Matthew Eggert, Nathan Berneir, Eli Ager, Dawson Greene, and Andrew Senorski.
- The Statesmen FY/Novice 8+ rounded out the morning events by leading their race from start to finish. Starting as bow 1, the Hobart continued to solidify their lead, getting up to speed almost immediately as they crossed the start line. Maintaining their lead throughout the course, the crew continued to pull further ahead of the Tigers, establishing open water between the two.
- Crossing the finish, the FY/Novice Statesmen stopped the clock at 15:34 with a first-place finish.
COLLEGIATE EIGHT
- Hobart had two boats entered in the varsity eight races.
- The Statesmen's first varsity 8+ was rowed by Ellie Dial, Elliot Morris, LJ Justus, Buckley Newbold, Kiré Richardson, William Walker, Fletcher Grantham, Nolan Adams, and Henry McComb.
- Holding their lead throughout their event, the 1V was able to continue to pull away from the rest of the crews as they began their pieces. With open water, the Statesmen remained uncontested from beginning to end.
- The boat rowed through the finish with a time of 14:36.
- The Hobart Second Varsity 8+ was manned by Sam Hyman, Liam O'Connor, Stefan Markovic, Braden Hendrickson, Cameron Nixon, Dylan Faulk, Liam Yokanovich, Joey Burvis, and Jack Rudolph.
- Firmly establishing momentum early, the Statesmen's Second Varsity was able to get up to rate and follow closely behind the Hamilton boat in front. Battling the Continentals throughout the race, the men traded seats until around the 1000-meter mark when both crews came upon an RIT 8+, and Hamilition moved away, leaving Hobart behind the Tigers.
- In the last 1000 meters, the Statesmen were able to successfully call for a sprint and row through the RIT crew, landing Hobart in fifth place with a time of 15:10.
COLLEGIATE 4
- The Hobart Varsity 4+ was driven by Sam Hyman, Buckley Newbold, Kiré Richardson, William Walker, and LJ Justus.
- Leading the field, the Statesmen V4 began their race vigorously, starting their event on a high note, building to a rate of 33. Although rhythm occasionally varied, the men fought to keep their speed consistent. With 400 meters left, the Statesmen executed a sprint, placing them in second place with a time of 16:13.
- The Statesmen's Second Varsity 4 was powered by Ellie Dial, Elliot Morris, Fletcher Grantham, Liam O'Connor, and Henry McComb.
- Kicking off their race with an explosive start, the boat quickly established a strong rhythm, building to a rate of 31-32 strokes per minute. The crew maintained its momentum through the first thousand meters, allowing them to pass the Continental boat around the 1,250-meter mark, letting the Hobart crew secure third place on the podium. The Statesmen's Second Varsity crossed the finish line with a time of 16:27.
