Two members of the William Smith lacrosse team were recognized by USA Lacrosse Magazine as All-Americans yesterday. Junior defender Janey Sypeck was selected to the second team and senior defender Lily Kuhn earned honorable mention recognition.

Sypeck and Kuhn were also named preseason All-Americans by the publication. Since 2021, the Herons have earned 21 All-American awards from USA Lacrosse Magazine.

Sypeck and Kuhn anchored William Smith's defensive unit that is ranked 19th in the nation in scoring defense (7.00). They also facilitate the Herons' clearing unit that is first in the nation in clearing percentage (.918). William Smith's defense combined for 232 caused turnovers, 69th in the nation in caused turnovers per game (11.60).

The 2026 Liberty League Defensive Player of the Year, Sypeck, started 18 games this season. One of the most dominant defenders in the conference, she led the Liberty League with 46 caused turnovers. Sypeck's 2.56 caused turnovers per game are 44th in the nation. She had a career-high five caused turnovers against Hamilton. Sypeck recorded four or more caused turnovers in a game seven times this season, including a win over then No. 6 Washington and Lee to close out the regular season. She had at least one caused turnover in her final 11 games of the year. Sypeck's 46 caused turnovers are second on William Smith's single-season list. She also led the Herons with 43 ground balls. Sypeck scooped up a season-high five ground balls twice.

Sypeck earns USA Lacrosse Magazine All-Recognition for the second time, moving up one spot after being named to the third team last year. A three-year starter, Sypeck has played in 60 career games. She has 99 caused turnovers and 97 ground balls. She is fourth on the Herons' all-time list.

Kuhn started all 20 games this year. A lockdown defender, she was second on the team with 33 ground balls and had 15 caused turnovers. Kuhn was often tasked with face guarding the opponents' top offensive threat. In the Liberty League tournament, she held the conference's top two goal scorers to just three goals combined. Kuhn had a season-high three caused turnovers in the win over Hamilton. She had two caused turnovers in a game four times. Kuhn brought in a season-high four ground balls in wins over the Continentals and Ithaca. Her speed and confidence with the ball is a big reason behind the Herons' top-ranked clearing unit.

Kuhn played in 75 games during her career. A two-year starter, she recorded 57 caused turnovers and 82 ground balls.

William Smith finished the season with a 17-3 record, advancing to the second round of the NCAA tournament. The Herons went 10-0 in Liberty League play, capturing both the regular season and tournament titles.
