Box Score KEUKA PARK, N.Y.—The William Smith College basketball team opened its season with an 89-63 victory over Keuka this afternoon. The Herons improved to 1-0 overall, while the Storm fell to 0-1 on the season.
Senior guard
Latasha Coney (Lyons/Lyons, N.Y.), sophomore forward
Ashlinn Barber (Spencer Van-Etten/Spencer, N.Y.), and sophomore guard Molly Danahy (Troy/Troy, N.Y.) led the William Smith effort. Coney posted a double-double, netting 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, while Barber scored a game-high 20 points, and Danahy followed close behind with 18. Barber also collected six rebounds, while Danahy and Coney each recorded four steals. Additionally, sophomore guard
Colleen Lukas (Southern Cayuga/Genoa, N.Y.) registered a game-high seven assists, and matched Coney's rebound total with 10, and senior forward
Erin Cunningham (Morris Knolls/Rockaway, N.J.) recorded 12 points and five boards.
Leading Keuka was Jessica Fink with 14 points, Nikki Zahn with 13 points and four rebounds, and Melissa Thurston with 11 points and five boards.
Midway through the first half, the Herons held a 10 point lead, 26-16. The Storm answered with 11 unanswered points, capped by a Thurston layup, to take a 27-26 advantage with 7:02 left on the clock. William Smith reclaimed the lead at the 5:41 mark, after two good buckets from first-year #Carrie Stevens (Cazenovia/Cazenovia, N.Y.)# and a layup by Barber, but Keuka would end the stanza with a surge and take a 40-38 lead in to the break.
The Herons came out a new team, and quickly took the game back. A jumper by sophomore guard
Amy Guthrie (Kent Place School/Florham Park, N.J.) at the 14:51 mark gave William Smith a 12-point advantage, and with 10:08 remaining, a three-pointer from Danahy put the Herons up by 21. The Storm did not threaten again, and William Smith seized its largest lead of the contest, a 32-point advantage, with just over three minutes left to play.
The Herons will be back in action on Nov. 21, when they square off against Farmingdale State in the New Paltz Tournament at 3 p.m.
