Danahy, Herons hold off Golden Flyers

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.--The William Smith basketball team kept a pesky Nazareth squad at arm's length, never trailing in a 60-55 non-conference win in Bristol Gym tonight. Sophomore guard Mollie Danahy led all scorers with 18 points, connecting on 5-of-10 from the floor, including a pair of threes, and all six of her free throws.

Junior forward Erin Cunningham contributed 11 points to the winning effort, while sophomore forward Ashlinn Barber pulled down a game-high seven rebounds, helping the Herons to a 40-32 advantage on the glass. Senior guard Latasha Coney dished out a game-high seven assists to go with eight points.

Junior guard Kelly Dunne led the Golden Flyers with 17 points, while first-year guard Brittany Wilson added 10.

William Smith (3-1) appeared primed for a blowout, scoring the first 15 points of the night. Danahy led the surge with seven points. Nazareth (2-2) refused to go away, using a 15-0 run of its own to tie the game at 26-all with 30 seconds left in the first half. Danahy stopped the run with a three-pointer to send the Herons into the locker room with a 29-26 lead.

Cunningham scored the first five points of the second half to push William Smith's lead to eight, but again the Flyers rallied, getting within one, 36-35, at the 12:48 mark on a three by junior forward Jamie Malloy.

After a Heron timeout, William Smith rattled off 11 unanswered points, including five from senior guard Paige Myers (9 pts), and grew its lead to 15 with a 14-2 overall run.

Naz closed within six, 55-49, with 38 seconds left, but Myers and Coney combined for four straight free throws to push the lead back to 10 with 18 ticks left. Dunne's three at the buzzer accounted for the final margin.

Neither team shot particularly well from the floor--35.4 percent for the Herons and 34.4 percent for the Flyers--but William Smith was 6-of-11 from behind the arc and made 20 free throws, while Nazareth was 6-of-17 from long range and only attempted nine shots from the charity stripe.

The Herons will be back in action on Dec. 2, when they travel to Ithaca. The opening tipoff with the Bombers is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
