Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith basketball team notched a 72-56 win over Vassar behind senior guard
Latasha Coney's triple-double bid this afternoon. The native of Lyons finished with a game-high 23 points, a team-high nine rebounds, and a game-high seven steals.
Coney was the only Heron to hit double digits in the scoring column, but William Smith (8-6, 2-1 Liberty) benefited from a balanced offense with 11 of 12 players scoring at least two points. Junior forward
Erin Cunningham (Morris Knolls/Rockaway, N.J.) and first-year forward
Kristen Kush (Fulton/Fulton, N.Y.) each contributed nine points to the winning effort.
Vassar (2-9, 0-2) put three players in double figures led by first-year forward Kristyn Tempora's (St. John Vinney/Marlboro, N.J.) 14-point effort. Junior forward Emily Haeuser (S. Portland/S. Portland, Maine) added a double-double of 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds before fouling out with 7:05 remaining. First-year guard Brittany Parks (Escondido/Escondido, Calif.) notched 11 points and half of the Brewers' eight assists.
A game plagued by fouls (53 combined), both teams struggled to find traction in the early going. Parks hit a three at the 4:02 mark of the opening half to put Vassar in front 29-28. The shot served as a wake-up call for the Herons, who closed the half on a 13-2 run. Coney and Kush fueled the knockout punch with five points apiece on the way to a 41-31 halftime lead. After the intermission, William Smith kept its lead between 10 and 20 points.
Vassar enjoyed a 43-31 advantage on the glass, but struggled to connect from the free throw line (42.9 percent) and the three-point arc (26.7) and committed 32 turnovers. The Herons shot 43.1 percent from the floor, including 40 percent from behind the arc, and a modest 64.3 percent from the line.
William Smith is back in action at 6 p.m. on Jan. 23, when the Herons host Skidmore, while Vassar returns to the hardwood at 6 p.m. on Jan. 20, when the Brewers host RPI.
