Ithaca hands William Smith its 1st loss

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith basketball team suffered its first loss of the season tonight, a 103-81 setback at the hands of Ithaca. The loss evens the Herons record at 1-1, while the Bombers improve to 1-1.

Ithaca shot 52.7 percent from the floor, including 9-of-23 from behind the three-point arc, and 94.1 percent from the free throw line. William Smith connected on just 34.7 percent of its shots, including 5-of-26 from long range. The Herons did shoot well from the free throw line, making 88.9 percent for the game, including all 18 shots they attempted in the second half.

The Bombers put five players in double digits, led by Katherine Bixby's 21. Elissa Klie, Riley Dunn, and Jane Debiasse added 20, 15, and 10 points, respectively. Lindsay Brown contributed 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

William Smith got a game-high 23 points and a game-high five steals from Mollie Danahy. She sank 4-of-6 from behind the arc and made all seven of her free throws. Making her first collegiate start, Carrie Stevens chipped in a career-high 15 points and a career-high matching 10 rebounds. Ashlinn Barber also hit double digits with 14 points for the Herons.

Ithaca started the game on a 12-2 run, including eight points from Bixby. With a layup midway through the opening frame, Klie put the Bombers ahead 20-9. The visitors never let their advantage dip below 10 from that point on. A 14-2 run later in the frame stretched Ithaca's lead to a first-half high of 27, 52-25. The Bombers carried a 55-31 lead into the break.

Stevens got the second half's first points on a traditional three-point play, sparking a 13-3 Heron run. Ithaca regained its composure and countered with a 23-4 run that ballooned the lead to 81-48.

William Smith will be back in action on Dec. 4, when the Herons face Worcester St. in the first round of the Williams Holiday Classic.
