Herons have full slate for final home weekend

The William Smith basketball team will play its final two home games of the regular season this weekend and have a full slate of activities planned for Bristol Gym. The Herons will host St. Lawrence at 6 p.m. on Fri., Feb. 13, and Clarkson at 2 p.m. on Feb. 14. Admission to both games is free.

Along with hundreds of basketball teams nationwide, William Smith will participate in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) Pink Zone weekend. Formerly known as Think Pink, Pink Zone is a global, unified effort by the WBCA to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.

For both games, the Herons will wear pink t-shirts during their shootaround and pink shoelaces. All fans are encouraged to wear pink to the games to show their support. William Smith will also be accepting donations for the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. Yow was the head coach of the women's basketball team at North Carolina State University and is one of only six Division I women's basketball coaches to accumulate 700 career wins. Sadly, Yow passed away on Jan. 24, 2009, following her third bout with breast cancer.

In addition to Pink Zone activities, the Herons will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) during the Clarkson game. Sponsored by the William Smith Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, events will include face painting, halftime activities, and a postgame autograph session with the Herons.

NGWSD began in 1987 as a day to remember Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and her work to assure equality for women's sports. Hyman died of Marfan's Syndrome in 1986 while competing in a volleyball tournament in Japan. Since that time, NGWSD has evolved into a day to acknowledge the past and recognize current sports achievements, the positive influence of sports participation, and the continuing struggle for equality and access for women in sports.

Last, but certainly not least, the William Smith Athletics Department will celebrate Senior Day prior to the start of the Clarkson game. The Herons will acknowledge the many career achievements of guards Latasha Coney (Lyons/Lyons, N.Y.) and Paige Myers (Massena/Massena, N.Y.). The pair has led William Smith to a 75-30 record over the past four seasons, capturing two Liberty League regular season titles, one Liberty League tournament crown, two NCAA Tournament bids, and an ECAC Upstate Tournament championship.

William Smith enters the weekend with an 11-9 overall record, including a 5-4 mark in the Liberty League. St. Lawrence (14-6, 7-3) defeated the Herons 68-50 in Canton on Jan. 31, one day after the Herons had defeated Clarkson 72-67.

Fans unable to attend this weekend can follow all of the action online with ECAC.tv, WHWS-FM, and Live Stats.
