Kush’s 20 leads William Smith past St. Lawrence

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—First-year forward Kristen Kush scored a season-high 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the William Smith basketball team to a 64-62 upset of St. Lawrence in a Liberty League showdown tonight. Kush connected on 10 of 15 from the floor and played a season-high 36 minutes.

Teammate Latasha Coney's triple double bid came up short (18 pts, 14 rebs, 7 assts, 4 stls), but she sank two of her five free throw attempts in the final 40 seconds to secure the victory. The Saints had four shots in the final 30 seconds that would have tied the contest or given the visitors the lead, but all four missed the mark.

St. Lawrence (14-7, 7-4) shot just 34.4 percent from the floor, while the Herons made 42.4 percent.

William Smith (12-9, 6-4) scored the first five points of the game and led by as many as 12 before the intermission. The Saints trimmed the Herons' lead to 33-28 at halftime with seven unanswered points, including five from senior Katie Palmer (21 pts, 9 rebs).

The lead changed hands four times in the second half. Palmer tied the game for the ninth and final time with a pair of free throws with 52 ticks remaining. Coney made the frontend of a two shot foul 13 seconds later to put William Smith in front for good. Palmer missed a jumper on the other end of the floor and Coney corralled the carom forcing the Saints to foul with 20 seconds to go. Again, she made the first of two freebies, but grabbed her own rebound and ran the clock down to 17 seconds before heading back to the line. Coney missed and St. Lawrence got three more looks at the basket, but missed a pair of layups and a three before sophomore Colleen Lukas (8 pts, 3 rebs) grabbed the night's final rebound and secured the victory.

Katherine Edgerton and Casey Capello joined Palmer in double digits, contributing 14 and 11 points, respectively, off the bench.

William Smith will be back in action at 2 p.m. on Feb. 14, when the Herons host Clarkson (6-16, 1-10). St. Lawrence will visit Hamilton also at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
