The Hobart College tennis team defeated St. John Fisher 8-1 tonight at the HWS Tennis Center. The Statesmen improved to 3-14 overall, while the Cardinals fell to 4-12 on the year.
Hobart swept singles play, starting with first-year
Kevin Kent's (Trinity-Pawling/New York, N.Y.) 6-1, 6-0 victory over St. John Fisher's Matt Aquino at No. 1. Following Kent was sophomore
Harry King (Concord & Carlisle/Concord, Mass.) with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Mike O'Connor at No. 2. First-year
Kevin Bates (Groton-Dunstable/Groton, Mass.) took the third singles match 6-1, 6-1 vs. Karl Schiefer, while classmate
Mike Kofman (Newton South/Newton, Mass.) defeated Jake Van Buren 6-2, 0-6, (10-6) at fourth singles. First-years
Walter Green (Ridgewood/Ridgewood, N.J.) and
Matt Hursh (Weston/Weston, Conn.) rounded out the line-up with victories at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. Green came from behind to defeat Jack Forrest 5-7, 7-5, (10-7), while Hursh handled John Wheelehan, 6-0, 6-4.
In doubles action, Hursh and sophomore
Matt Chin (Hingham/Hingham, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-3 win over Aquino and O'Connor at No. 1, while Kofman and sopohomore
Guillaume Etlin (Lycee des Franxa-Biurgeois/Paris, France) earned the 8-3 victory over Schiefer and John Zinni at No. 3.
The Statesmen will be back in action on April 16, when they travel to Nazareth for a match at 4 p.m.
