Statesmen V8 wins bronze at States

WHITNEY POINT, N.Y.—The Hobart varsity eight won a bronze medal at the New York State Collegiate Rowing Championships and in the process captured its fourth consecutive Liberty League Championship today. The Statesmen second varsity eight won a gold medal yesterday.

In today's grand final, the varsity eight covered the 2,000-meter course in 6 minutes, 15.3 seconds. Ithaca won the race, 5.66 seconds ahead of Hobart, while Marist was second. Iona, RIT, and Army rounded out the six-boat field. The Statesmen varsity eight was powered by Reynaldo Kelly, Max Swagler, Andrew Cobb, Ben Ramsey, David Roberts, Jack Trimble, Matt Scanlon, Andrew O'Donnell, and David Grossman.

The event also doubled as the Liberty League Championship. Originally scheduled for April 25 in Canton, the conference championship was postponed due to adverse weather conditions. The league's coaches voted to award this year's title to the top varsity eight at the state championships. The next highest finishing Liberty League team was Union, which took second in the petite final.

Hobart's varsity four won the petite final. Owen Henn, Jeffrey Pribor, Gerry Samson, Alex Kahn, and Ronnie Martin crossed the finish line in 7:27.47, 5.41 seconds clear of second place Hofstra.

The Statesmen novice eight also competed, placing sixth in the grand final. Hobart's time of 6:35.88 was 9.28 seconds behind the winning crew from St. Lawrence.

The Statesmen will be back on the water on May 9-10 for the ECAC Championships in Cherry Hill, N.J.
