Clarkson uses big 2nd half to upend Herons

Box Score POTSDAM, N.Y.—Ashlinn Barber led four William Smith basketball players in double figures with 22 points, but Clarkson used a 50-point second half to eke out an 83-80 Liberty League victory. The Golden Knights also had four players reach double digits paced by Carey Turner's game-high 23.

Clarkson (4-13, 1-6) trailed by eight at halftime. Mollie Danahy's layup two minutes into the second half stretched that advantage to 10, but the Herons (5-12, 1-6) would not connect on another field goal for more than three minutes. During that time, the Golden Knights used a 12-1 swing to take a 49-48 lead. Danahy, who recorded 15 points, a game-high six assists, and three steals, finally snapped William Smith out of its scoring slumber with a three-pointer that put the visitor's back in front, 51-49.

Over the next six minutes, Clarkson kept the pressure on the Herons, outscoring them 20-8 to build a 69-59 lead. This time it was William Smith's turn to rally, outscoring CU 17-6 over the next five minutes of game time. Barber completed the comeback with a three-pointer that gave the Herons a 75-74 lead with 3:14 remaining. She finished the game 7-of-14 from the floor and 7-of-9 from the free throw line.

The teams traded the lead back and forth over the next two minutes until Lauren Pluchino put the Knights in front for good, sinking a pair of free throws for a 78-77 lead. The freebies kick-started a 6-0 Clarkson run that proved too much to overcome for the Herons.

Julie Hooper added 12 points and three assists to the William Smith effort, while Kristen Kush chipped in 10 points and five boards.

Clarkson's Katie Goldberg, Michelle Reddinger, and Pluchino added 12, 11, and 10 points, respectively. The Knights enjoyed a 45-31 advantage on the glass thanks in part to Noelle Miller's game-high eight rebounds.

CU shot 46 percent from the floor, including 51.6 percent in the second half, and 74.1 percent from the free throw line. William Smith shot 43.5 percent from the field, sinking 5-of-9 from behind the arc, and 70 percent from the line.

William Smith will be back in action on Feb. 5, when the Herons host Union. Tipoff in Bristol Gym is scheduled for 6 p.m.
