SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—Three Hobart tennis players reached the second round of the singles draw at the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships hosted by Skidmore College.
Sam DeLuccia,
Bruce Grant, and
Alex James produced victories for the Statesmen.
DeLuccia defeated St. Lawrence's Ren Gates 6-3, 6-4 before falling to the No. 2 seed, Ben Guzick 6-4, 6-1. Grant topped Oneonta's Michael Kennelly 7-6 (7-1), 6-1. He lost to Kennelly just three weeks ago in the Flower City Invitational. Grant lost in the second round to the draw's No. 1 seed, Skidmore's Luke Granger 6-3, 6-4. James had the toughest route to the second round, outlasting Oneonta's Will Sacco 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 10-4. Skidmore's Spencer Cheng ended James' run 6-1, 6-1.
Hobart's
Peter Cruice lost in the first round to Vassar's Dan Freeman 6-2, 6-2.
The Statesmen didn't fare as well in doubles play. Grant/James and DeLuccia/Cruice both fell in the first round.
The USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships are the final event of the fall season for Hobart.
