CSI can't nab Herons in Boston

The William Smith basketball team made a season-high 18 steals to run away from CSI (College of Staten Island) for a 90-57 victory in the consolation game of the Emmanuel College Invitational Tournament today. The Herons were led by junior forward Kristen Kush, who earned a spot on the All-Tournament team after scoring a career-high matching 27 points.

William Smith (1-2) shot 49.4 percent from the floor and 83.3 percent from the free throw line, while limiting the Dolphins to 36.7 percent from the floor. Kush did more than her share to contribute to the Herons' shooting percentage, connection on 13-of-17 from the floor. Senior guard Mollie Danahy added 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including a pair of threes, while Sophomore guard Sydni Salvatore contributed 11 points off the bench.

First-year Liz Douglass led the William Smith thievery, logging a game-high five steals in addition to a game-high eight assists and six points. The Herons also dominated the glass, outrebounding CSI 47-35. William Smith first-year Jacqueline Murphy collected a game-high 12 caroms.

Allie Shanahan scored a team-high 19 points for the Dolphins, while Rachel Rosado added 10.

Staten Island (0-2) grabbed its second and final lead, 20-19, with 10:29 remaining in the first half, before the the Herons seized control. William Smith scored the game's next 10 points, including a pair of buckets by Kush, as part of a 23-4 run that put the Herons in front 42-24 with 79 seconds left in the opening half. The Dolphins scored the final five points of the half to go into the break down 42-29.

William Smith scored the first three baskets after the intermission and never looked back.

The Herons will be back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 30 when they compete in the first round of the Wendy's College Classic. Tournament pairings are scheduled to be announced on Nov. 28.
