Sherwin leads Herons on Day 2 of States

SYRACUSE, N.Y.—William Smith first-year Casey Sherwin led the William Smith swimming and diving team at the Upper New York Swimming Coaches Association Championships today. She placed fifth in the 100-yard backstroke and swam on a pair of relays.

Sherwin led a strong showing by the Herons in the 100 backstroke. She qualified for the championship final seventh in 1 minute, 1.82 seconds and improved her time by 0.31 seconds in the evening to move up two spots. Senior Jessica Cook qualified for the consolation final and finished seventh (15th overall) in a time of 1:03.61, while junior Lindsay Simonson (1:05.42) and first-year Arianna Vasquez (1:06.27) placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in the third level final (23rd & 24th overall).

Sherwin also helped both Heron relays finish second in the consolation finals (10th overall). In the 200 medley relay, she teamed with first-year Jordan Hawn, first-year Heidi Gordon, and sophomore Lauren Morosky for an evening time of 1:54.67, more than a second faster than their morning qualifying swim.

In the 800 freestyle relay, Sherwin, sophomore Caitlin O'Brien, senior Charlotte Scott, and first-year Katie Stebbins posted a time of 8:17.76. William Smith's B relay, Ellen Ellison, Morosky, Cook, and senior Rachel Johnson were seventh among B relays (23rd overall) in 8:33.58.

Stebbins and Hawn earned berths in the consolation final of the 100 breaststroke. Stebbins took fifth place (13th overall) in 1:11.68, while Hawn was seventh (15th) in 1:12.92.

In the 100 butterfly, Gordon took eighth (16th) in 1:03.08.

In the 400 individual medley, Scott won the third level final in 4:57.37, dropping more than three seconds from her morning swim time (5:00.52).

The strong night saw the Herons leap up to 10th place in the 17 team championship. William Smith was 14th after the first day of competition. The UNYSCSAC concludes tomorrow. The morning prelims begin at 10:30 a.m. with the finals starting at 6:30 p.m.
