Herons to host Pink Zone weekend

The William Smith basketball team, along with hundreds of basketball teams nationwide, will join the Women's Basketball Coaches Association for the WBCA Pink Zone® weekend on Feb. 12 and Feb. 13. Formerly known as Think Pink, Pink Zone is a global, unified effort by the WBCA to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.

The final two home games of the season, William Smith will host Clarkson at 6 p.m. on Friday, and St. Lawrence at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Admission to both games is free.

Throughout the weekend, the Herons will wear pink t-shirts during warm ups, pink shoelaces and play with a pink Wilson basketball. The team encourages all fans to wear pink to the games to show their support. William Smith will also be soliciting donations for the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.

Yow was the head coach of the women's basketball team at North Carolina State University and is one of only six Division I women's basketball coaches to accumulate 700 career wins. Sadly, Yow passed away on Jan. 24, 2009, following her third bout with breast cancer.

William Smith Head Coach Lindsay Drury had this to say about the upcoming weekend, “One of the great things about college athletics is that we have the opportunity to raise awareness about important issues. So many people have been directly or indirectly affected by breast cancer. The Kay Yow Foundation has done a tremendous job raising money through the Pink Zone, and the William Smith basketball team is proud to be a part of the fight against breast cancer.”

The William Smith Athletics Department will also celebrate Senior Day prior to the start of the St. Lawrence game. The Herons will acknowledge the contributions of lone senior, captain Julie Hooper. She has started all 17 games for the Herons this season, averaging 8.7 ppg and is the team's leading three-point shooter (.352, 31-88).
