Hobart tennis begins 2010-11 season at Flower City Invitational

The Hobart tennis team will kick off the 2010-11 season this weekend at the Flower City Invitational with their first match against Nazareth College at 9 a.m. on Sept. 11. Head Coach Carol Weymuller will return 10 veterans and welcome seven newcomers to the team.

Sophomores Alex James and Bruce Grant are back on the courts after seeing significant playing time as rookies. The All-Liberty League honorable mention doubles selections paired up to post a 6-13 record at first doubles. In 2009-10, James also received all-league singles honorable mention, and finished with a team high 11 singles victories (11-8) including a 10-7 mark at third singles. Grant registered a 6-11 record at first singles last season.

Juniors Matt Hursh and Kevin Bates are back to build on last season's results. An All-League singles honorable mention selection, Hursh posted an 8-9 record at second singles (8-12 overall), and a 7-11 mark at second doubles (7-13 overall). Bates finished second on the team with 10 singles victories (10-8 overall) and posted an 8-7 mark at No. 5 singles. He earned an overall doubles record of 8-10 (8-7 at No. 3).

Also returning are senior Matt Chin and juniors Walter Green and Kevin Kent. Chin posted a 6-5 singles record and a 7-11 mark at second doubles (7-13 overall) in 2009-10.

The Statesmen bring in five first-years, Andrew Mason, Ben Robinson, Nicholas Schoning, George Trimble and Nick Vonderheyde. Hobart also welcomes Cory Andrews, a junior transfer from Arcadia, and sophomore Sam DeLuccia. All will look to add depth and continue to challenge for playing time.
