Herons compete in Wesleyan Round Robin

The William Smith squash competed in the 2011 Wesleyan Round Robin over the weekend. The Herons posted a 1-4 mark, earning a 7-2 victory over Colgate, but falling 9-0 to No. 21 Tufts, No. 13 Mount Holyoke, and No. 19 Wesleyan 9-0. The Herons lost a match 8-1 to No. 25 Smith.

The Herons, ranked No. 28 in the latest College Squash Association Poll, are now 2-6 this season.

Against Smith on Saturday, sophomore Tyler Mitchell earned the lone win for the Herons. Mitchell defeated Eunice Zhao 11-5, 11-8, 12-10 at No. 4.

On Sunday against the Raiders, William Smith picked up victories at Nos. 2-5 and 7-9. Junior Olivia Beckwith led the Herons with an 11-7, 11-5, 11-7 triumph at the No. 2 spot. At No. 3, sophomore Ginny McDermott posted an 11-5, 11-7, 11-4 victory. Mitchell earned her second win of the round robin in four matches at No. 4 (8-11, 11-8, 11-3, 11-9), and senior Katie Riordan logged an 11-9, 11-0, 11-4 win at No. 5.

At No. 7, sophomore Nellie Lindecke registered a 3-0 win (11-4, 14-12, 11-6). First-year Molly Doran cruised to an 11-3, 11-3, 11-6 win at No. 8 and sophomore Hannah Meyer rounded out the Heron lineup, battling for a five-match win at No. 9 (11-3, 9-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-9).

William Smith will be back in action Jan. 28, when the Herons take part in the Smith Round Robin in Northampton, Mass.
