CANTON, N.Y.—For the sixth time in as many season, the Hobart rowing team will be returning to campus with the Liberty League Championship trophy. Although the conference crown is awarded to the winner of the varsity eight race, the Statesmen swept all three events, in dominant fashion.
"All of our boats had very good races and handled the conditions well," Head Coach
Mike Alton said. "The Statesmen once again rose to the challenge of defending their league title against some good competition. It's a pretty big accomplishment to win a championship in our league and we're fortunate to have put together a string of them."
In the varsity eight heats, Hobart won a head-to-head showdown with Skidmore, crossing the finish line in 5:41.8, nearly 30 seconds ahead of the Thoroughbreds. In the final, Hobart squared off with Union and St. Lawrence.

Coty Burgess seized the lead right away and enjoyed a comfortable margin by the midpoint of the race. Their second 2,000 meters of the day were even faster than the first, clocking in at 5:35.1. The Dutchmen were a distance second in 5:56.1.
The second varsity eight was a final only event with Hobart facing down Union.

Michael Copacino charged down the course in 5:58.8, 19.3 seconds ahead of the Dutchmen.
The novice eight of
Chris Depaola,
Kevin Benz,
Edward Amorello, Robert Shannon,
Edward Witcher,
Alex Kent, Stephen Gemmiti, and
Dylan Corbett won the "closest" men's race of the day, posting a time of 5:58.1. Second place St. Lawrence was more than 13 seconds behind.
The Statesmen will be back on the water on April 30 and May 1 when they compete in the New York State Rowing Championships in Whitney Point.
