The Rensselaer women's lacrosse team edged William Smith 10-8, after a back-and-forth game that included five ties. The Herons are now 5-9 overall and 3-4 in league play.

With the win, the Engineers improved to 9-4 and 5-2 in the conference, and clinched the final spot in the four-team Liberty League Tournament.

Sophomore Kathleen Ragan led William Smith with four points on one goal and three assists. Junior Rosie Scheibel scored three goals. Junior Katherine Vesce chipped in a goal and an assist. Junior Lucy Johnson picked up a game-high four ground balls, won three draw controls, and caused two turnovers. Sophomore Jesse Wilson made five saves in all 60 minutes of play.

Alissa Peterson and Stephanie Caouette led Rensselaer each contributing two goals and an assist. Jen Greenwood added a goal and a helper. Whitney Kukol scored twice and won two draw controls. Allie Arnal stopped 10 shots to earn the win.

The Engineers started off the scoring when Peterson set up Caouette for a 1-0 lead at 4:58. The Herons then took the momentum scoring the next three goals. Johnson fed Ragan at 5:24 to tie things at one. Scheibel logged an unassisted tally at 6:42, and first-year Hannah Schickel scored her second goal this year just 25 seconds later to give the Herons a 2-1 advantage.

Rensselaer answered with three goals of its own. Peterson capitalized on a free position at 8:08, and a little under a minute later, Kukol found the back of the net to tie it at three. At 12:18, Peterson scored another free position goal to put the Engineers up 4-3.

Twenty-eight seconds later, junior Kathryn Gillan took advantage of a free position opportunity to tie the game at four. At 18:17 into the first, Ragan set up Scheibel who put William Smith back on top, 5-4. With 11:16 left in the opening half, the Herons attempted to scoop up a ground ball, but couldn't hang on, and an own goal tied things up at five. Madeline Sisson logged her fourth goal of the year to give Rensselaer back the lead 23 seconds later.

With 8:19 before the break, Scheibel fired into the back of the goal after a pass from Vesce for the game's fifth tie. It was her 30th goal this season. With 6:07 left on the clock, Kukol scored her second goal of the afternoon to give the Engineers a 7-6 lead at halftime.

Rensselaer came out strong in the second half scoring the first two goals. At 3:24, Shannon Maguire recorded an unassisted goal, and Jen Greenwood followed with a free position tally to make it 9-6. Senior Cassie Findlay fired a shot past Arnal at 9:10 in the second to cut the Herons' deficit to two. At 16:46, Caouette scored her second goal of the game to make it 10-7. With 5:47 remaining, Vesce scored on a free position to get William Smith back within two, but that was as close as the Herons would get.

William Smith recorded a 27-17 advantage in shots and a 16-11 edge in ground balls. The Herons also won 15 draw controls, while the Engineers came up with just five.
