GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart tennis team defeated Roberts Wesleyan 7-2 in a match played tonight at the HWS Tennis Center. The Statesmen improve to 4-1, and served the Raiders (3-1) their first loss of the season.
Hobart came out on top of the rematch between the two teams. Roberts Wesleyan topped Hobart 5-4 back on Sept. 10, in the Flower City Invitational.
The Statesmen finished doubles play with all three points. Junior
Bruce Grant and first-year
Michael Fields paired up for a close 8-7 (7-4) victory at the top spot. Juniors
Alex James and
Sam DeLuccia cruised to an 8-1 win at No. 2, and seniors
Matt Hursh and
Kevin Bates secured an 8-4 win at No. 3.
Hobart earned wins at Nos. 3-6 in singles play. Hursh rallied to top Beka Buchukuri in a close 6-7, 6-3, 10-5 match at No. 3. Fields earned his second win of the day defeating Enrique Flores 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4. At the No. 5 spot, James triumphed at No. 5 6-4, 6-2, and first-year Matthew Massey won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6.
The Statesmen will be back in action Sept. 30-Oct. 2 when they compete in the ITA Northeast Regional Championships in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
