St. Lawrence blocks William Smith’s path to victory

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team effectively deployed its height advantage, blocking nine shots in a 78-63 Liberty League victory over William Smith College. The Saints' Kelly Legg led the way, making a bid for a triple-double in the process with nine points, 10 rebounds, and seven blocked shots.
 
SLU's Katie Edgerton and Kara McDuffee led all scorers with twin 18-point performances. Erica Spera added 11 points and nine rebounds.
 
For William Smith, Chloe Hayter recorded a team-high 12 points and seven rebounds. Jacqueline Murphy notched her fifth double-double of the season on 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Erin O'Brien chipped in 10 points and two blocked shots while Jaimie Rubin had seven points and a game-high seven assists.
 
The first half was tightly contested with five ties and six lead changes. Murphy forged the game's final tie with a layup at the 5:54 mark. The Saints (9-4, 5-0) got some separation by scoring the next nine points, including five from McDuffee. The Herons scored the final four points of the opening 20 minutes to go into the break trailing 38-33.
 
William Smith (5-7, 1-2) cut its deficit to three twice in the second half, the last time on a 3-pointer by Sydni Salvatore at the 11:07 mark, but St. Lawrence countered with the next seven points to take a 66-56 lead. A short while later the Saints put the game out of reach with a 12-0 run that ballooned their lead to 18.
 
SLU enjoyed a 19-3 advantage in points off turnovers, finishing the game plus-eight in turnover margin. The Saints also had a slight rebounding edge (46-45) to stretch its winning streak to six games.
 
William Smith will be back in action at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17, when the Herons continue conference play at RIT. St. Lawrence will return home to face Rensselaer at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20.
