Box Score TROY, N.Y.—William Smith College first-year forward
Chloe Hayter produced her first collegiate double-double but Rensselaer first-year Jen Rock hit a 15-footer at the buzzer to give the Engineers a 52-50 Liberty League women's basketball victory at East Campus Arena.
The Herons led 27-26 at halftime and stretched their advantage to as many as nine in the final 20 minutes. Hayter sank a pair of free throws with 6:36 left to give William Smith a 47-40 lead. She finished with 11 points and a season and game-high 14 rebounds.
Sarah Whetmore started RPI's rally with a bucket at the 6:08 mark that opened a 12-3 finishing run. She tied the game on a jumper with 65 seconds remaining. The Herons misfired on a 3-pointer with 37 seconds to go, but Hayter grabbed the rebound.
Rock regained possession for the Engineers when she stole the ball and called timeout with 2.3 seconds remaining. She collected the inbound pass and nailed the winning shot.
Sophomore guard
Sasha Borenstein led all scorers with 14 points. She had four 3-pointers, including three in the first half.
Rock finished with a 13 points and eight rebounds, both team-highs, along with three assists and a steal. Wetmore added 10 points.
RPI (11-7, 5-4) enjoyed the edge in rebounding 43-41 and points in the paint 24-20.
The loss snaps William Smith's three-game winning streak. The Herons (8-8, 4-3) will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 28 when they travel to Skidmore. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
