Jacqueline Murphy became just the 13th Heron to record 500 career rebounds, collecting 11 caroms in a 59-45 non-conference victory over SUNY Cortland in Bristol Gym this afternoon. The Heron basketball team improved to 4-3 while the Red Dragons slip to 3-6.

The first half saw William Smith jump out to an 8-0 lead. Cortland called a timeout and countered with seven unanswered points. From that point, the Heron lead yo-yoed between one and five points until the Red Dragons made a surge to end the half.
O'Brien drained a 3-pointer to give William Smith a 24-19 lead with 5:30 remaining. Cortland scored the final nine points of the half, including four from junior guard Megan Touhey (8 pts, 4 assts), to take a 28-24 lead into the locker room.
O'Brien and Hayter led all scorers with nine points apiece at the break. The Herons shot just 20.6 percent in the opening half while the Red Dragons shot 36.4 percent.
Hayter opened the second half scoring on a short jumper that sophomore guard Lindsey Minor (9 pts) answered with a 3-pointer to give the visitors their largest lead of the game, 31-26. Over the next five minutes, William Smith outscored Cortland 17-8, including four 3-pointers from Borenstein, to build a 43-39 lead midway through the frame.
First-year guard Shannon White dialed long distance to get the Red Dragons within one, but the Herons rattled off the game's next eight points to seize control of the contest. In the final five minutes, William Smith closed out the game by scoring the final eight points.
In the second half, the Herons shot 46.2 percent from the floor (31.7% overall) and went 5-of-10 from behind the arc.
William Smith will be back in action on Dec. 29-30 when the Herons compete in the NYU Holiday Classic. Cortland is off until Jan. 8 when the Red Dragons visit SUNY New Paltz.
