Kush posts double-double in regular season finale

Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—On the final day of the regular season, William Smith College senior Kristen Kush scored 11 points and grabbed a season-high 14 rebounds, but Vassar College rallied from an eight-point second half deficit to post a 70-55 Liberty League victory. The loss pushed the Herons out of a Liberty League tournament spot.

Kush moved up two spots to No. 12 on William Smith's career scoring list, passing Trena Sutton '88 (1,155 pts) and Marisa Vespa '08 (1,157). Sophomore Sasha Borenstein scored all 10 of her points, including a pair of 3-pointers, in the first half. The treys raised her season total to 74, five off the William Smith season record set by Jill Brower '93 in 1991-92. Sophomore Jacqueline Murphy enjoyed another impressive performance on the glass, collecting 11 caroms. She passed Wendi Schoff (251 in 1996-97) and Gwen Scott (260 in 1978-79) to move into third place on season rebounds list with 261.

All five Vassar starters reached double digits in the scoring column while Colleen O'Connell added 10 points and a game-high 21 rebounds off the bench. Brittney Parks leads all scorers with 15 points and six assists. Kristyn Tempora scored 13 points and Cydni Matsuoka, Ali Higgins, and Hannah Senftleber each scored 10 points.

In the first half, the teams traded the lead nine times in the early going before William Smith seized control. A 9-2 run turned a 1-point Vassar lead into a six point advantage for the Herons midway through the period. William Smith stretched its lead to as many as eight (on a 3-pointer by Sydni Salvatore at the 4:37 mark) and carried a 34-28 lead into the break.

Kush made the first basket of the second half to restore the Herons' eight-point lead, but a 14-4 run by the home team gave Vassar a 42-40 lead with 12:04 remaining. William Smith was within four with 8:11 remaining, but the Brewers netted the game's next six points to balloon its lead to 10, a deficit from which the Herons were unable to recover.

Vassar (16-9, 10-6) shot 41.5 percent from the floor and 80 percent from the free throw line. William Smith (13-12, 9-7) shot just 27.8 percent from the floor, including 10-of-40 in the second half, and 57.1 percent from the line. Both teams had 47 rebounds.

With a winning record, the Herons are eligible for an ECAC Upstate Tournament berth. Those tournament pairings will be announced on Feb. 27.
