Herons edge Saints, advance to Epps Cup championship

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—
The William Smith College squash team, ranked 25th in the most recent College Squash Association rankings, edged No. 28 St. Lawrence 5-4 in a semifinal match of the Epps Cups this morning. Junior Anne Habecker clinched the victory for the Herons with a 3-2 win at No. 4.

William Smith, the top seed in the D Division of the CSA Team Championships, is now 9-11 overall. The Herons advanced to the Epps Cup championship match where they will face the No. 2 seed, Smith College tomorrow at 1 p.m.

The Saints picked up wins at the top three spots, and recorded a four-game win at No. 9. The Herons dominated at the middle of the ladder, picking up wins at Nos. 5-8. Junior Courtney Leous defeated Charlotte Edson at No. 5 11-4, 11-5, 11-8. Sophomore Ginny McDermott registered a 12-10, 11-4, 11-5 at No. 6, and senior Katie Riordan posted a 12-10, 11-8, 11-9 victory at No. 7.  At No. 8, senior Sarah Cutts battled for a five-game win (4-11, 11-6, 4-11, 11-7, 11-0).

The overall score was tied 4-4 with the match at No. 4 remaining. St. Lawrence's Kendall Harty won the first game 11-8, but Habecker came back to win the second 13-11 and followed with an 11-7 win in the third game. Harty won 11-4 in the next game to force a fifth game. Habecker posted an 11-6 win to put the Herons in the finals.
