Kristen Kush scored a season-high 16 points, but Liberty League front-runner St. Lawrence powered past the Herons 78-60 in Burkman Gymnasium tonight. The loss drops the Herons a half game behind second place Rensselaer.
An 8-0 run midway through the first half that included back-to-back 3-pointers by
Sasha Borenstein and
Sydni Salvatore, put William Smith in front 23-19. The Saints struck back with nine unanswered points to take the lead for good. SLU closed out the half on a 10-1 run to carry a 42-32 lead into the break.
After the intermission, the Saints (16-4, 12-0) never let their lead dip into single digits. SLU shot 50 percent from the floor and 71.4 percent from the free throw line. The Herons (10-9, 6-4) shot 39.3 percent from the floor and 52.6 from the line.
Kush was 6-of-9 from the floor and 4-of-6 from the line.
Erin O'Brien scored nine points while
Molly Breen added seven points, three rebounds, and two blocked shots.
Jacqueline Murphy shared game-high honors with seven rebounds.
The Saints' Casey Capello made all three of her 3-point tries and led all scorers with 19 points. Kelly Legg chipped in 15 points and a game-high four steals.
William Smith will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 4, when the Herons visit Clarkson (7-11, 2-8). Tipoff in Potsdam is scheduled for 2 p.m.
