Special events mark final home weekend for Heron Hoops

Hobart and William Smith Basketball
The William Smith College basketball team will play its final two regular season home games this weekend and have several special events planned. During both games, the Herons will wear special pink uniforms in support of the national Play 4Kay campaign, recognize National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD), and celebrate Senior Day.

On Friday, Feb. 10, William Smith hosts Skidmore at 6 p.m. in Bristol Gym. The Herons will don pink uniforms to show their support for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Play 4Kay initiative which raises breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, and in the community. The team will be selling HWS Basketball t-shirts to raise money for local breast cancer charity Embrace Your Sisters.

On Saturday, Feb. 11, the William Smith College Athletics Department will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD). The Heron Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is coordinating a wide-range of activities in conjunction with the William Smith basketball game against Rensselaer.

Admission to the game is free for all fans. Girls will also receive a voucher for free popcorn. Prior to the 2 p.m. tipoff, there will be free face painting for fans. During halftime, girls will be invited to participate in relay races and shooting contests on the court.

Immediately following the contest, girls in eighth grade and younger will be given a tour of the Carver-DeLaney Basketball Team Room where members of the Heron basketball team will sign autographs.

NGWSD began in 1987 as a day to remember Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and her work to assure equality for women's sports. Hyman died of Mafan's Syndrome in 1986 while competing in a volleyball tournament in Japan. Since that time, NGWSD has evolved into a day to acknowledge the past and recognize current sports achievements, the positive influence of sports participation and continuing struggle for equality and access for women in sports.

Additionally, Saturday's game will also mark the final regular season home game for seniors Kristen Kush and Chelsea Tracy. They will be honored in a special pregame ceremony.

William Smith begins the week with an 11-9 overall record, 7-4 in the Liberty League. The Herons are currently tied for second place in the conference standings with the Engineers. The top four teams make the league's championship tournament.

William Smith will visit conference rival Union on Tuesday, Feb. 7. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. The Herons will return to Bristol Gym for their final two regular season home games on Feb. 10 and Feb. 11.
