Statesmen capture 7th Liberty League title

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Hobart College rowing team won the Liberty League Championship for the seventh season in a row. The Statesmen varsity eight finished more than eight seconds ahead of the runner-up to secure the crown.

The Hobart varsity eight of Sarah Tanzer, Coty BurgessNicholas BacaRobert McNamaraRob NanovskyW. Hunter HoltzNick Hindle, Owen Monahan and Joe Biesemeyer raced down the 2,000-meter Fish Creek course in 6:27.0, 11.3 seconds ahead of second place Union. RIT was third followed by Skidmore.

The Statesmen also prevailed in the second varsity eight, outdueling the Dutchmen in a two-boat race. The Hobart crew of Jessica Dinan, Chris Troy, Nathaniel Shils, Reid Johnson, Morgan Robinson, Tyler Wilson-Menting, Michael Copacino, Michael Cichelli, Chris DePaola crossed the finish line in 6:46.0 with Union 28.31 seconds back.

The Statesmen also entered a crew in the novice four race. Hobart finished second to RIT with St. Lawrence rounding out the field.

"We began our championship season this weekend in good form," Hobart first-year Head Coach Paul Bugenhagen said. "The boats executed their race plans well and are focused on building speed through the final weeks of the season. We're proud to represent the Liberty League as champions as we move on to the New York Championships and ECAC Championships."

Hobart is back on the water on May 5-6, when the Statesmen compete in the New York State Championships in Whitney Point.
