The William Smith Athletics Department honored three Heron lacrosse players at the annual William Smith Athletics banquet on April 24. Seniors
Lucy Johnson and
Callie Frelinghuysen shared the Patricia Price Genovese Lacrosse Award as the team's most valuable players, while senior
Megan Brophy brought home the Shirley Zornow '48 Lacrosse Coach's Award.
Johnson was tabbed the team's most valuable player for the second year in a row. The four-time All-Liberty League selection shared the team lead with 45 goals and chipped in five assists for 50 points this season. Johnson led William Smith with 51 ground balls and ranked third on the team with 15 caused turnovers. Her team-high 72 draw controls are a new William Smith single season record.
Johnson played in 63 games over the past four seasons. She ranks first in William Smith history with 172 career draws. Johnson's 145 career goals rank eighth on the all-time Heron list. She is also tied for eighth in career ground balls (166) and tied for 10th in career caused turnovers (57). A three-time Liberty League All-Academic selection, Johnson earned spot on the 2012 Liberty League All-Tournament Team.
A two-year captain, Frelinghuysen led William Smith with 24 caused turnovers this season. She ranked second on the team in assists (20), ground balls (41), and draw controls (34). Frelinghuysen also chipped in 20 assists for 37 points this year. She finished the season ranked fourth in the Liberty League in caused turnovers per game (1.32) and eighth in assists per game (1.05).
Frelinghuysen played in 60 games in her Heron career and ranks third in William Smith history with 81 career caused turnovers. She is also tied for 10th in career draws (86). The three-time All-Liberty League honoree earned a spot on the 2012 Liberty League All-Tournament team. Frelinghuysen also made three consecutive appearances on the Liberty League All-Academic team.
A two-year captain, Brophy earned the Shirley Zornow '48 Lacrosse Coach's Award for the second straight season. The anchor of the William Smith defense, she recorded 15 ground balls, eight caused turnovers and three draws. A two-time all-conference pick, Brophy scored her first collegiate goal in a 17-6 victory over Rochester this year.
In 62 career games, she logged 58 ground balls, 14 draws and 38 caused turnovers.
The Herons finished the season with a 9-9 overall record and a 7-2 mark in Liberty League play. Third-seeded William Smith topped upset second-seeded RIT 14-10 in the Liberty League tournament semifinal, but fell to top-seeded Rensselaer in the championship game.
