Sasha Borenstein made all three of her 3-pointers during an 18-2 run that propelled the William Smith College basketball team to a 65-60 victory over Buffalo State College at the Ocean Center Arena. She was one of three Herons in double digits, finishing with 13 points.
With William Smith (4-2) trailing 42-37 with 12:25 left in the second half, Borenstein kicked off the decisive run with a 2-point jumper. First-year guard
Melanie Patterson (7 pts) followed with a layup and Borenstein hit from behind the arc on back-to-back shots to give the Herons a 5-point lead.
The Bengals' Staci McElroy interrupted the run with two of her 14 points, but senior guard
Erin O'Brien (13 pts, 3 assts) and Borenstein countered with triples and
Lauren Brustein (8 pts) added a bucket to stretch the Heron lead to 55-44 with 5:38 remaining. O'Brien added another 3-pointer with 3:50 to go, giving William Smith its largest lead of the day, 60-48.
Buffalo State (5-2) almost shot its way back into the game, using a 12-2 run that cut the Heron lead to just three with 21 seconds to go. The Bengals scored the next four points before Patterson hit from 3-point range. BSC's Olivia Luciani made back-to-back 3-pointers to finish off her 11-point game, and Kala Crawford (11 pts, 6 assts) made two free throws to make it a 63-60 game.
Senior guard
Jacqueline Murphy closed out the Heron win with a pair of free throws with seven seconds to remaining. She finished with four points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Junior forward
Chloe Hayter scored 11 of her team-high 15 points in a back-and-forth first half that saw her pick up three fouls. Junior forward
Molly Breen, who played important minutes for Hayter early in the second half, finished with five points, seven rebounds, and three assists.
Ashley Wallace paced the Bengals with 15 points and Bianca Smiley grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.
William Smith held a 44-39 advantage in rebounds. The Herons shot 39.3 percent from the floor, including seven 3-pointers, and made 10-of-13 from the line. Buffalo State shot 35.4 percent from the floor with five 3-pointers and went 9-of-11 from the charity stripe.
William Smith will wrap up its stay in the Sunshine State with a 2 p.m. game in the Ocean Center against Potsdam on Saturday, Dec. 21.
