Hobart tennis begins spring season hosting Roberts Wesleyan this weekend

The Hobart College tennis team will begin the spring portion of its schedule on Sunday, Feb. 17. The Statesmen will host Roberts Wesleyan for a match at noon on the indoor courts in Bristol Field House.

“The team is excited to get the season underway. There are four seniors in the starting lineup this year, who will undoubtedly be looking to leave a positive mark on the Hobart tennis program,” said Head Coach Tim Riskie.

Hobart began the 2012-13 season taking part in the 2012 Nancy J. Heath Invitational hosted by Allegheny. The Statesmen dropped their match to the Gators 6-3 back on Sept. 8. Hobart rounded out its fall schedule competing in the ITA Northeast Regional Championships in Ithaca.

Senior so-captain Bruce Grant and sophomore Michael Fields advanced to the championship doubles semifinal. The pair became the first Statesmen to advance that far since Peter Pine '05 and Adam Raffa '06 did so in 2004. Senior Peter Cruice and Grant posted 1-1 records in the championship singles bracket, while senior co-captain Sam DeLuccia and Fields dropped their first round singles matches. DeLuccia notched a win in his consolation match.

Cruice leads the team with a 2-1 singles record in the fall. Grant and Fields recorded a 3-1 doubles mark.

The Statesmen will host Oneonta for another match at Bristol Field House on Saturday, March 2 at 10 a.m. Then Hobart will travel to Orlando, Fla., playing five matches during spring break.
