Statesmen begin season with 2 wins, advance to Flower City championship

The Hobart College tennis team started the 2013-14 season with victories over Elmira and Oneonta State today in the Flower City Invitational. The Statesmen cruised to a 9-0 sweep of the Soaring Eagles in their first round match and then topped the Red Dragons 8-1 in the second round.

This morning, Hobart picked up three victories in doubles play to take a 3-0 lead over Elmira. First-years Jake Criss and Danny Kot teamed up for an 8-0 win at No. 3 and fellow first-years Michael Rusk and Matt DePrima notched an 8-1 victory at No. 2. Junior Michael Fields paired with first-year David Shankman to battle for an 8-4 win at the top spot.

Fields earned his second win of the day 6-0, 6-3 at the top singles spot. Shankman posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2 and Rusk downed his competition at No. 3, 6-0, 6-0. First-year Patrick Dunk breezed to a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 and DePrima claimed a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at No. 5. Senior Ben Robinson blanked his Soaring Eagle opponent 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.

The Statesmen then took on Oneonta State, who had earned a 9-0 victory over St. John Fisher in its first round. Hobart once again swept doubles play to jump out to a 3-0 advantage. Fields and Shankman notched an 8-3 win at the top spot. Rusk and DePrima came away with an 8-4 triumph at No. 2 and Criss and Kot registered an 8-3 win at No. 3.

The Statesmen then logged wins at Nos. 2-6 singles. Shankman downed his opponent 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 and Rusk clinched the overall win for Hobart with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 3. Dunk won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 and DePrima edged his Oneonta opponent 6-4, 7-5 at No. 5. Robinson cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 6.

The Statesmen will be back in action tomorrow, Sept. 8, in the Flower City Invitational championship match at 9 a.m. Hobart will face Rochester, who swept RIT 9-0 in its semifinal match.
